Myrtle Candy Younger

LIFE REFLECTIONS
Myrtle Candy Younger, affectionately known as Candy, was born on August 11, 1940, in Aubrey, Arkansas, to the late Leonard Younger and Aller Green Coleman. Candy was called home on June 15, 2023. She is preceded in death by her siblings: Charles Shaw, Denise Younger, Dempsey Word Jr., Ohney Mims, Bernnie Dean Word-Shelby, and Lawyer B Word.
Candy attended school in Aubrey, Arkansas. She later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where she married Douglas, her first husband, with whom she had no children. In the 60s, Candy divorced and remarried Ronald Hill. They were joined in holy matrimony in the 70s. There were no children from this union. Both husbands preceded her in death.
Candy was the first African-American woman in St. Louis to be a liquor distributor. She worked as a bartender, medical assistant, and home healthcare aide. Additionally, she was one of the best bakers and caterers in St. Louis, renowned for her pound cake.
Candy adopted Timothy Robinson and became a foster mother to Wonnell Byrd, Courtney Travis, and Bernnie Allen. In the midst of her life's journey, Candy realized there was something more. She gave her life to the Lord. She attended Lovejoy Baptist Church. Later Candy joined Good Samaritan Baptist Church, where she actively served for over 25 years. She initiated the health unit, served as a pastors' aide, sang in the choir, and held the position of president in the Union District Choir.
Candy is survived by her children who will cherish her memory: Timothy Robinson, Wonnell Byrd Jr., Courtney Travis, and Bernnie Allen. She is also survived by her siblings: Ralph Gilmore (Birch, Arkansas), Virgie (Malcolm) Ross (Chicago, Illinois), Beverly Thomas (Kenneth Missouri), Patria Aikens (Buffalo, NY), Denise (Mallory) Younger (Compton, California), Annette (Alif) Williams (St. Louis, Missouri), Charles Word (St. Louis), Jerrie Word (St. Louis), Carl (Cynthia) Word (Olive Branch, Mississippi), and Pat Word (St. Louis, Missouri). Additionally, Candy leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, numerous friends, and a special niece, Anita Candy Horne. Candy will always be loved.
