May Lee Cosby

May Lee Cosby (née Collins), beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully at home on Sept. 22, surrounded by her family. She was 95 years old.

Born in Jonestown, Mississippi in 1927 to Hosea and Louise Collins, she was one of six children, all of whom have preceded her in death. She moved to St. Louis in 1952, and made the city her home for the next 70 years.

May was married to Mr. Tommy Jones Sr. with whom she had three children. After the dissolution of this marriage, May united with Joe H. Cosby and together they had seven children.

A devout Christian, she attended Full Gospel Miracle Temple for decades, and later became a church mother at Kossuth Church of God in Christ in north St. Louis.

She loved to cook soul food for her family, and will be remembered for her delicious peach cobbler and sugar pie.

She is survived by children Barbara Ann Dennis, Joe H. Cosby, Ray Cosby (Lisa), Mary L. Cosby,  Patricia Cosby, Velesta Rouse (Thomas), and Mark Provine Cosby (Arleen). She is also survived by nearly 30 grandchildren, and dozens of great-grandchildren, great- great grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Joe Cosby, who died in 2000, as well as daughter, Lena Jones and sons Tommy Jones, Jr., and Kim Cosby and beloved son-in-law, Lee Dennis.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Kossuth Church of God in Christ at 3801 Clarence Ave. in St. Louis., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.

Afterward, friends and loved ones are invited to join her family in a procession to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at 2900 Sheridan Road, St. Louis, where she will be buried alongside her husband, Joe H. Cosby.
