Chief Warrant Officer 4 Louie Young's dedicated service spanned over three decades, a testament to his enduring commitment to safeguarding our nation's waters. Born on September 25th, 1938, Louie's remarkable 30-year career in the United States Coast Guard exemplified resilience, leadership, and a steadfast dedication to duty.
Louie's leadership and expertise were instrumental in numerous missions, ensuring the safety and security of our coastal waters. His unwavering commitment to duty and exceptional professionalism earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
CW04 Louie Young dedicated his life in service to our nation, embodying the Coast Guard's core values of honor, respect, and devotion to duty. He was one of the first Black Warrant Officers in the Coast Guard, climbing the enlisted ranks from E-1 through E-9 (Master Chief) before becoming a Warrant Officer. His service also includes many classified missions which are sealed. Additionally, he was a Frogman, a title that predated the Navy Seals. His tireless efforts and expertise have undoubtedly left a lasting imprint on the Coast Guard community, contributing to the safety and security of our maritime borders.
In retirement, CW04 Louie Young continued to embody the Coast Guard's motto, "Semper Paratus" - Always Ready, contributing to his community. He leaves behind a legacy of Civil Rights service, a family of military service, and sacrifice that will be remembered by his family, friends, and the grateful nation he served.
He is survived by his eldest son, Louie Tyrone Young, a U.S. Army Special Forces Veteran and Master 13th degree All Styles Martial Artist, and his youngest son, Victor Heston Young, a Professional Percussionist, Saint Louis Conservatory of Music Student, and Graduate of Le Cordon Bleu. Additionally, Leon Young, a Scientist-Histotechnology professional, All-State Navy Wrestling Champion, and Navy Veteran, preceded him in death on February 27th, 2023.
As we bid farewell to a true patriot, let us remember CW04 Louie Young for his selfless contributions, his legacy of service, and the lasting impact he made on the United States Coast Guard. Louie is preceded in death by his beloved wife, loving, caring, kind and devoted Mother, Shirley Lee Young (Maiden Name: Meeks), (Musician for The Shirelles and Barba Scotia College student, fluent in French), who passed away on June 1st, 2000.
Chief Warrant Officer 4 Louie Young will lay in state on December 20th, 2023, at the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum, 1315 Chestnut St, St. Louis, MO 63103, starting at 10:00 a.m. Following this, a memorial service will be held, providing an opportunity for friends, family, and colleagues to pay their respects. Internment with full military honors will then take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Rd, St. Louis, MO 63125, at 12:30 p.m.
